What are Axminster & Wool Rugs?
Axminster and wool rugs are rugs made from wool carpet, including traditional Axminster carpet and other quality wool flooring.
Wool is a natural carpet fibre that has been used in quality floor coverings for generations. It has a distinctive feel and appearance and can work particularly well when turned into a rug.
Axminster carpet is known for its detailed patterns, rich colours and traditional construction. Depending on the carpet available, an Axminster piece can make a particularly distinctive statement rug.
At McMats, our selection changes as surplus and clearance carpet becomes available. This means the colours, patterns, sizes and quantities available will vary regularly.
For customers looking for something specific, the best option is to visit the warehouse and see what is currently available.
Why Choose an Axminster or Wool Rug?
There are several reasons wool carpet can be an excellent choice for a rug.
Natural Wool Fibre
Wool is a natural carpet fibre with a distinctive texture and appearance.
Premium Look and Feel
Wool carpet can provide a more traditional, substantial feel than many synthetic carpet products.
Unique Patterns
Axminster carpet is particularly useful when you want a rug with character, pattern and colour rather than a plain floor covering.
Durable Flooring Material
Quality wool carpet is designed for use as flooring, making it a practical material to repurpose into a rug.
Surplus Carpet Can Offer Better Value
Surplus and clearance Axminster and wool carpet can provide access to quality materials without the price of buying a brand-new premium rug from a traditional rug retailer.
View the Carpet Before Deciding
You can see the actual carpet at the McMats Melbourne warehouse before deciding whether it is suitable for your rug.
Axminster Wool Rug Sizes and Availability
The finished size of your rug depends on the piece of carpet selected.
We may have:
- Smaller wool carpet pieces
- Larger room-sized pieces
- Axminster carpet
- Patterned wool carpet
- Plain wool carpet
- Surplus carpet suitable for custom rugs
- Carpet suitable for hallway runners
- Different colours and patterns depending on current stock
Stock changes regularly, so we don’t publish a fixed range of Axminster and wool rug colours or patterns.
If you’re looking for a particular colour, pattern or size, contact us or visit the warehouse to see what is currently available.
Looking for a specific size?
If you need a particular finished rug size, our Custom Rugs service may be the better option.
We can discuss the carpet available and whether a suitable piece can be cut and finished to your required dimensions.
Axminster Rugs
Axminster carpet is particularly interesting when used to create a rug because of its patterns, colours and traditional appearance.
An Axminster rug can become a feature of a room rather than simply functioning as floor covering.
Depending on the current surplus stock, Axminster carpet may be suitable for:
- Living room rugs
- Dining room rugs
- Bedroom rugs
- Entry rugs
- Feature rugs
- Hallway runners
- Large custom rugs
Because Axminster carpet is often patterned, the finished appearance of a rug can depend heavily on the size and shape of the original carpet piece.
That’s why seeing the actual carpet before making a decision is useful.
Wool Carpet Rugs
Wool carpet can also be used to create rugs where you want a natural fibre, quality appearance and comfortable feel underfoot.
Available wool carpet can vary from traditional styles through to more contemporary colours and textures.
At McMats, the selection depends on the surplus and clearance carpet currently available, so there may be opportunities to find wool carpet that would cost considerably more through conventional retail channels.
Colours, styles, sizes and quantities change regularly.
Custom Axminster & Wool Rugs
If you have a particular finished size in mind, an Axminster or wool carpet piece can potentially be turned into a custom-sized rug.
The process starts with selecting suitable carpet from the McMats warehouse.
Once you’ve found a carpet you like, we can discuss the finished size and provide a quote for the custom work.
Custom rugs can be useful when you need:
- A specific length or width
- A large feature rug
- A particular hallway runner size
- A rug to suit an unusual room
- A wool or Axminster rug that isn’t available as a standard retail size
Custom rug pricing is quoted individually and is separate from pricing for ready-made rugs.

- Potentially better value than buying comparable premium carpet as a new retail rug
It also means the range is constantly changing.
